Waiting for the monsoon: how a farm gets ready for rain
Monsoon preparation in Sindh starts before the rain: clear drains, sound pond banks and a plan for crops, animals and deliveries.
Rain can be welcome on a hot Sindh farm and still create work within minutes. A blocked drain may leave a vegetable bed under water, while a damaged pond bank can put a season of fish at risk. Preparation starts with knowing where water will go.
Our regional calendar places the monsoon mainly between July and September. Rainfall varies from year to year, so a calendar is only a starting point. Local forecasts and official weather alerts matter when making decisions about fieldwork, travel or a harvest.
The checks that matter before rain
Before rain, drainage channels need checking for weeds, silt and rubbish. Bunds and pond banks need inspection, especially around inlets and outlets. The useful question is simple: if heavy rain arrives tonight, can excess water leave without damaging the field or carrying fish out of a pond?
Stored grain, feed, tools and electrical equipment also need attention. Keeping supplies away from floodwater and maintaining safe access to animal shelters can prevent a difficult day from becoming a much larger problem. Repairs are easier to arrange before roads and working areas turn muddy.
Crops and deliveries in wet weather
Kharif crops have different needs. Rice, okra and chillies cannot all be managed in the same way, and warmth-loving crops can still suffer in waterlogged soil. Planting decisions need to suit the plot, its drainage and the conditions expected locally.
For customers, heavy rain may affect picking or delivery even when an order is ready. If you need produce for a particular event, contact us ahead of time and confirm the delivery window. Good monsoon preparation includes a practical plan for getting food from the farm to your kitchen.
