Fish farming in Pakistan: which species pay, and what a pond costs

Freshwater aquaculture in Pakistan: which species pay for beginners, stocking densities, pond costs, and the mistakes that sink a first pond.

The short answer

For a first pond in Pakistan, tilapia is the most forgiving and fastest-returning species — market size in roughly six months, tolerant of poor water. Rohu earns more per kilo but takes about twelve months and demands better water management. Most viable operations in Sindh and Punjab run a polyculture of rohu, thaila and mori together, because the three feed at different depths and use one pond three times over. We have run six ponds on this basis since 2018; what follows is what they taught us.

Which freshwater fish is most profitable for beginners

Tilapia is the honest answer for a first pond. It reaches a marketable 400–600 g in about six months, tolerates low dissolved oxygen and swings in water quality that would kill carp, and it sells readily because it is mild and low in bones. The trade-off is a lower price per kilo — roughly ₨550–850 against ₨700–1,100 for rohu — and it breeds prolifically in the pond, so you need to manage stunting.

Rohu is the better earner per kilo and the harder fish to grow. It wants twelve months, cleaner water, and consistent feeding, and it punishes overcrowding with the muddy geosmin taint that makes buyers avoid pond fish. Thaila (catla) grows faster than rohu and fetches slightly less; mori (mrigal) is the cheapest of the three and the most useful as a bottom feeder.

The standard Pakistani polyculture stocks all three carps together in roughly a 40:30:30 ratio precisely because they occupy different feeding niches — catla at the surface, rohu in the column, mrigal on the bottom. One pond, three harvests, no additional feed cost for the bottom fish.

Stocking density is the decision that determines everything

The temptation with a new pond is to stock heavily, because the arithmetic on paper is compelling: more fingerlings, more kilos. What actually happens is that dissolved oxygen crashes at dawn, waste accumulates, disease pressure rises, and you begin dosing the water to keep the stock alive. The fish that survive taste of the pond they grew in.

We stock thin — well below what an intensive operation would — and the pond largely manages itself. Dissolved oxygen and pH get tested daily and the corrections are small. Fewer kilos per acre, better fish, far lower input costs and no medication. For anyone selling direct to households rather than into a wholesale market, that trade is worth making, because your customer can taste the difference and a wholesaler cannot.

What a pond actually costs to start

Excavation is the largest single line and varies enormously with soil and machinery rates — an acre-sized pond of adequate depth is a serious earthmoving job. Beyond that you need a reliable water source (canal share or tubewell), an inlet and outlet, and basic bunding that will survive a monsoon.

Running costs are dominated by feed, which is typically 50–60% of the total cost of production in a fed system. Fingerlings, labour, pumping and testing reagents make up most of the rest. The single most common financial mistake we see is underestimating feed and stocking to a density the feed budget cannot actually support.

The most common technical mistake is building a pond too shallow. Shallow water heats brutally in a Sindh summer and holds less oxygen, and a pond that cooks its own stock in June is not recoverable by any amount of good management afterwards.

The part nobody mentions: ponds and fields feed each other

Pond water is nutrient-rich, and pumping it onto crops works as a gentle fertiliser. On our farm the vegetable beds irrigated with pond water are visibly greener than the ones on canal water alone, and that saved input cost never appears in any aquaculture budget we have read.

It also solves the water-exchange problem. Draining nutrient-loaded water is a disposal issue for an isolated pond; on a mixed farm it is simply irrigation. Integrating the two halves of the operation is the strongest argument for putting ponds on cropland rather than treating aquaculture as a separate business.
